Naturally, we have not turned a blind eye to problems in the built environment other than those of housing shortage. Par from it. However, the gravity of the housing problem and the possibility of solving an acute national dilemma still led the focus of the building sector and thus of building research to shift towards productivity issues. The role of physical urban planning as a prepara tory step towards building construction assumed a prominent place and the nece ssity of producing the largest possible number of dwellings for the funds avai lable caused interest in operational costs to take a back seat.

The result of the discussion is put on record. Organized aid and planning for researchers' careers are generally thought to be essential in the literature. According to Bucher and Cray "it is critical to assist young scientists in establishing challenging goals which help them mature. The supervisor might assign an older more experienced scientist as a mentor for the young scientist. After technical maturity has been demons trated, the supervisor should give the scientist a chance to work alone on a problem, possibly by shifting him to a new project and possibly to a new super visor and new colleagues.

Lastotchkin (rapporteur), Byelorussian SSR INFORMATION SYSTEM FOR RESEARCH RESULTS In the Byelorussian SSR building is one of the most dynamically developing industrial branches. In this connexion, a timely dissemination of information on research results, aiming at their effective and the most expedient utiliza tion, is getting a particular importance. In the Byelorussian, SSR this field of activities is in care of scientific-tech nical information institutions. Information on the results of research work fulfilled on direct contracts with building bodies is transferred directly to these bodies by executor-institutes.
