There had not been many foreigners in San Pedro at the time I arrived, and often people darted away as I walked on back paths of town. But when I greeted them in Tz’utujil, they returned and addressed me, soon joined by a little crowd asking a barrage of questions. The questions were beyond my skill in Tz’utujil, but my new meeting chona and san pedro 45 acquaintances helped me understand and gradually I learned more of the language.
