In my first days in San Pedro, the greetings that I had learned in Tz’utujil served me well in transforming some women’s and children’s apprehension into curiosity. There had not been many foreigners in San Pedro at the time I arrived, and often people darted away as I walked on back paths of town. But when I greeted them in Tz’utujil, they returned and addressed me, soon joined by a little crowd asking a barrage of questions. The questions were beyond my skill in Tz’utujil, but my new meeting chona and san pedro 45 acquaintances helped me understand and gradually I learned more of the language.

I had for the first year been very impressed with the general congeniality of people in San Pedro, who greet each other on the street and are involved in each other’s lives in ways I had not seen growing up in a couple of middle-class EuropeanAmerican towns. Becoming involved in a multifaceted way in San Pedro allowed me to see past my romantic first impressions and realize that San Pedro factions run deep and human relations are complex—across political groups as well as among and within families.

Across the same decades in which schooling became common, the number of children born to each mother plunged, and so did the proportion that died in infancy. In 1968, mothers on average had given birth to about eight babies, and about a third of them had died in infancy; a generation later (in 1999), mothers gave birth to about two babies, and seldom did infants die. These changes made a big difference in the number of siblings available to children— reducing from numerous siblings to often having one or no siblings.
