The tank was now undriveable, and we were more than fortunate that we had no personnel casualties before I gave the order to abandon the tank. With my Adjutant, Wilfred Hargreaves and driver, Challqr White, we ran for cover, with the added incentive of a covering Spandau spraying us in a very hostile manner. I had lost two command tanks and a scout car in the previous twenty-four hours and it was not until the light failed and the Spandau could not see us, that we were able to move. "An interesting side light was revealed when my crew and I returned to our tank early on November 1, hoping to retrieve small personal and valuable possessions, such as razors, glasses, small kit etc and in my case a leather overcoat.

Apart from the good basic engineering of the vehicle itself, this was due in no little part to the really outstanding services given by the Regimental fitters and recovery teams.
